Hiking a glacier in Iceland

Our unconventional birthday celebration wasn’t quite over.  My now ten year olds had a glacier to hike!  While hiking a glacier was not high on the list of one birthday girl (who really wanted to ride Icelandic ponies on this celebratory day), birthday girl number two had bought into the excitement.  After all, who wouldn’t want to don a pair of crampons and yield a pick ax the day they hit double digits? The initial plan was hiking Skaftafell – Vatnajokull the second largest glacier in the world. …

It seems as if one can’t drive in Iceland for more than 15 minutes without seeing waterfalls.  I have this crazy obsession with water so personally, I’m fascinated!  Whether it’s the ocean, lakes, waterfalls, glaciers, hot springs, Iceland has it covered.  Like I said, this is the perfect place for me. I’ve always thought my love of water was quite the norm.  After all, who isn’t amazed by the power and strength of water?  When I initially perused my guidebook each and every waterfall made the list. Day one.  I…

Go to Reyjkavik Zoo and Family Park – it has fun rides and games.  My favorite part was jumping on the inflatable pillow. Go glacier hiking.  You use a pick ax and crampons so you don’t slip on the  ice. Take a walk between two tectonic plates (North American & Eurasian) at Thinglevirr national park.  The Rift Valley between the two tectonic plates sinks down about two centimeters a year. Take a tractor out to the cape at Inglsolour to see puffins!  In ten years they are going…

About half the nation of Iceland believes in elves & trolls. Iceland has a ton of hot springs. The hot springs are hot from the geothermal energy – the energy beneath the ground. In Iceland they speak Icelandic. Reykjavik is the biggest city in Iceland. Reykjavik is the capital city. Every year Iceland gets a tiny bit bigger from the North American tectonic plate and the Eurasian tectonic plate moving further apart. The earth’s second biggest glacier is in Iceland. To walk on a glacier you have to…

It wasn’t the day my turning ten year olds were asking for.  Actually, it was precisely what they weren’t asking for.  What they wanted was what every double digit turning ten year old wants….a day or an overnight with their friends.  Loud squeals, laughter, silliness, maybe a present or two, and …cake!  This day was everything but! This unconventional birthday of theirs takes place in Iceland of all unsuspected places.  They woke up to little fanfare, just a letter from mom telling them how special they are and…

I loved every bit of Iceland! The different shades of green, the mountains, and the waterfalls are all spectacular.  I’m so excited that I’m going to Amsterdam but sad that I’m leaving Iceland. My favorite part was probably the glacier walk and the glacier boat ride though the lagoon. The people are very friendly and nice and help out when people need help. Their towns are very small and beautiful. Many people there speak Icelandic and English so it wasn’t very hard getting around by asking people where…

So I knew we would have some bumps in the road.  A little turbulence so to speak.  And I knew it would happen soon.  We’re dealing with jet lag, sleeping four to a room, racing around a country to see as much as we can, living life a little to exhaustion so to speak.  I should have expected that on what my girls have now termed “Avery and Kaitlyn Eve” (after all there’s a “New Years Eve” & “Christmas Eve” they tell me), the night before their 10th birthday-…

I’ve had everything planned for months.  Well, not everything.  Actually, I’ve only had week one of fifty six planned…but I was feeling good.  We were going, ready or not.  The not part, well, that almost happened. For months I’ve had it on my calendar that our departure was June 25th at 12:16pm.  This date and time has been ingrained in my mind for what seems like forever.  Perhaps that was the problem.  The parts of my life I didn’t have organized, my friends kindly stepped in and made…
